Estimated Due Date (EDD)
It refers to the approximate date when a pregnant woman is expected to give birth to her baby. Calculating the EDD is essential for monitoring the progress of the pregnancy and ensuring that the developing fetus reaches full term.
EDD is typically determined based on the first day of the woman’s last menstrual period (LMP) and is calculated by adding 9 months and 7 days to LMP. It is applicable only when the previous menstrual cycles of pregnant women were regular. If exact LMP is not known or previous menstrual cycles of pregnant women were irregular then EDD given on first trimester (first three months of pregnancy) sonography is considered more accurate. However, it’s important to note that only about 4 percentage of women actually give birth on their calculated due date, as childbirth can occur naturally within a range of two weeks before or after the EDD.
Knowing the EDD is crucial for healthcare providers to schedule necessary prenatal care and monitor the health of both the mother and the developing baby. It also allows expectant parents to prepare for the arrival of their new family member and make necessary arrangements for labor and delivery.
